Snuggle Puppy: Puppies leaving their mothers can sometimes have trouble settling and sleeping in their new forever homes. These snuggle puppies can be invaluable. The small battery- operated heart that is places inside the soft puppy. Place in the crate with you new puppy it helps to calm your puppy and soothes him to a calmer , quieter state so he can sleep . |

CratesCrates: We encourage the use and training of crates for all our puppies. It not only ensures their safety when no family members are present, but it also gives your dog a safe, quiet place to go when they need to settle. |

Feed Dishes

We prefer stainless steel bowls for both food and water. Stainless steel does not break down as plastic does and is easier to keep clean and bacteria free.

Treats
|
Portuguese Water Dogs are, by nature, very mouthy. Because of that, they can enjoy a toy that will afford them hours of chew time! These Benebones are made in the USA and we can say from experience that they are long lasting even with the most aggressive chewers!

There are many different training treats on the market and you should try them until you find the ones that your dog likes the best. These are two of the ones we love to train with as they are small and, yes, kinda smelly. And they are made in the USA!

Training our dogs requires lots of patience, understanding and treats! We love these treat bag holders. They are durable and have a magnetic closure to help prevent those frustrating spills while working with your dog.

Grooming
|
Blower: A good blower is invaluable with these dogs. It is a given if you are bathing your dog at home that this will come in very handy to get the hair dry. We start our puppies with a similar one to get them used to the sound and feel of the blower. Our dogs have a race to see who can get on the table for their blow-dry first! You will find that these come in handy when your puppy comes in covered leaves, dirt or snow, too.

Shampoo: We have a couple of favorites for keeping our dogs clean and sweet smelling. A personal preference, Either works well

|
Brushes and Combs: Brushing your Portuguese Water Dog is essential in between clipping sessions. The brushes you buy will become a personal preference but we have several that we like for different reasons and for different grooming reasons.
At some time your Portuguese Water Dog will go through coat changes as they age. It will mean increased hair loss as they shed the old hair and their new coat comes in. This de-shedding brush picks up all those old, dead hairs from the younger coat. Interesting thing is that our dogs love this rake. We use it even on our older dogs as a form of massage for their skin.

Our favorite comb for detangling those mats that appear no matter what we do
A poodle comb helps you get right down to your dog's skin and ensures that your dog is mat-free. It helps to separate and untangle even the worst mats.

The slicker brush is an excellent tool for separating the hairs and getting into the matted areas of the dog. Work carefully and slowly with your dog when brush them out

A clipper is essential to keep your puppies muzzle clean.

A great starter set for home groomers. We encourage all our puppy owners to have fun and groom their own dogs. In the long run, it is far cheaper than taking them to the groomers. And, remember, it is just hair! It all grows back and your dog always thinks they are the best looking animal around!

Our puppies are introduced to a grooming table before they go to their homes. This table is perfect for a full grown PWD and is foldable for easy storage when not being used.

Finally, we have to talk about nail trimming. Groomers and vets will do your dog's nails for a nominal fee but the easiest way is to train your dog to accept a nail trimming at home. We trim the puppies nail regularly while they are with us. As puppies, their nails grow very fast. Done regularly from the time they come home, it can be quick and enjoyable for both you and puppy.

We always encourage all our puppy owners that, if possible, to get your dogs into the water as soon as possible. If introduced early, these dogs generally love the water whenever they can get a chance to jump right in! We love these love jackets for the support they give to the dog which encourages confidence in the water. Please make sure to get the size appropriate for your dog.
