The Portuguese Water Dog is a sturdy, well-muscled, medium build dog originally used in Portugal by the local fishermen. These dogs were used to herd fish into fishing nets and deliver messages between fishing boats. This is a hearty, hard working breed that is able to put in a full day’s work with a positive, enthusiastic attitude.
Male Portuguese Water Dogs stand 20 to 23 inches tall with the ideal height being 22 inches and weigh approximately 42 to 60 pounds. Females stand 17 to 21 inches tall with the ideal height being 19 inches and weight is 35 to 50 pounds. They come in two coat types, either curly or wavy. Their coats require regular care and grooming and they shed minimally. Coat colors can be black, brown, white and various combinations of black and white or brown and white.
The Portuguese Water Dog is a loyal companion. They are happiest close to their family, preferring to follow their owner everywhere he goes. They greet each day with enthusiasm and boundless energy. Regular exercise is a requirement of ownership. Without it, PWDs will quickly get bored and take it upon themselves to find something to do. These are working dogs. They were bred to have a job. If they are not given sufficient exercise, they will find a job on their own which may very possibly involve their owner’s laundry, newspapers or favorite lazy boy recliner.
Intelligence, a desire to work and a willingness to please their owner make the PWD a perfect companion dog for an owner who is able to give the time to exercise and training. With the proper care and commitment to this newest family member, you will be rewarded with a dog that will be obedient and loyal and a joy to all for years to come.
