Bob and Shelley Plucker live in Central Wisconsin and have two grown children.
Our adventure with Portuguese Water Dogs started in 1996 when we discovered this wonderful breed and were entrusted with our very special puppy, Toz. We wanted our children to experience the birth and care of a litter of puppies, so we found ourselves immersed in the world of dog shows in order for Toz to become an AKC Conformation Champion. Within eight shows, and under the care of a professional handler, Toz became a champion! When Toz reached the age of two, and after completion of all health tests, we searched for a stud dog with good temperament and sound health and structure. |
This led us all the way down to Biloxi, Mississippi where we met and befriended a wonderful couple, Ann and Colville Jackson. They became our mentors. Colville had bred cattle for forty years and was a wealth of knowledge about genetics and the dog world.
He was instrumental in our breeding decisions over the years and helped us produce Portuguese Water Dogs with excellent working temperaments and sound structure. With Colville's wisdom and guidance, our choice in stud dog for our first litter produced the #1 Portuguese Water Dog in the United States for 2001 and 2002. Our family has included our first Portuguese Water Dog,Toz, her daughter Tip, grandson Pirate and granddaughter Bling. Toz' granddaughter Mardi and great-granddaughter Santana live in Madison, WI, with our son and daughter and their families. Bob and I have our Mister babies - Azul and Ketch. Barb Crowther has Toz' great-grandson Mister and Mister's granddaughter Maura. Our dogs have earned titles in conformation, agility and water work.. We are very proud of the accomplishments of the puppies we have produced who have grown and gone on to be conformation champions, earn water work, agility and obedience titles and therapy certification.
We are members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America and have been recognized by the AKC through their Breeder of Merit Program. Shelley does committee work for our national breed club. We now show all our dogs in both Conformation and Performance venues ourselves. In 2013, Shelley's experience and success in breeding quality dogs for 15 years was acknowledged by her peers when she was asked to judge the prestigious Top Twenty event at the PWDCA National Specialty in California. The Afortunado breeding program has produced multiple AKC Champions. Mister has had a very successful show and performance career and always owner handled - a true reflection of the strength in both form and function of a proper working dog.
In 2002 a PWD joined the Crowther family. Thirteen year old Keegan did a wonderful job of training and showing Aidan in Conformation, Junior showmanship and Agility. Keegan handled Aidan to his AKC championship. They then added a Pirate son, Bandit, to their family. As time went on Barb became more involved in the dogs and handled Bandit to his AKC championship. That was just the beginning. Over the years Barb has gone on to compete in all venues of dog sport. Her dedication to the breed has led to Afortunado having an amazing friend and partner. Barb is co-owner of all our dogs, a traveling companion and is instrumental in all breeding decisions of Afortunado dogs. She is here, day or night, to welcome new puppies into the world.
Our dogs live with us as members of our family. They have the run of our fenced in property, they never let Bob sleep in as he is the designated morning dog walker, and most nights it is the human members of the family who battle for a place in the bed without getting kicked off!
